May 7, 2021

On April 18, 2021, the Surya, an East Java daily, published an article titled “Keberuntungan di Candi Chedi Ai-Khai” (Good Luck at Chedi Ai Khai Temple) by Nichada Praparat, a student of the ASEAN Studies Program, the School of Political Science and Laws.

Nichada writes about Wat Chedi (The Chedi Temple) in Sichon District, Nakhon Si Thammarat in this article. She traced for Indonesian readers the local legend about “Ai Khai” of the Wat Chedi, as well as a contemporary phenomenon in which large numbers of people, both domestic and foreign, have travelled each day and week to vow the wish and given offering items such as chicken statues, toys, and firecrackers after their wishes came true. This occurrence has boosted the economies of Sichon and Nakhon Si Thammarat. The inflow of visitors and believers may provide greater revenue to the villagers. This article also includes information on transportation, accommodations, and expenses for Indonesian readers who want to visit Wat Chedi.

This paper was developed as a result of an Indonesian language class that ASEAN Studies Program students took with Indonesian lecturers from the State University of Malang during the second and third semesters of the 2020 academic year.
