May 19, 2022

On 18 May 2022, Professor Dr. Surasit Vajirakachorn, Dean of the School of Political Science and Laws, led the ASEAN Studies Major of the Political Science Program in an online meeting with faculty members from the Center for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning, University Malaysia Sabah. Associate Professor Dr. Halina Sendera Mohd Yakin, Deputy Dean for Research, Innovation, and Community Services at the Center for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning, headed the Malaysian partner team.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the framework of academic cooperation being developed between the two institutions, as well as the content of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation between Walailak University and the University of Malaysia Sabah, which is in the process of being finalized.

Development of this academic collaboration is a key milestone in the school’s foreign affairs activity, since it is the first time the school has created and developed partnerships with a renowned East Malaysian university. The school believes that a framework for cooperation that includes learning support at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, joint research and publication of academic papers, and joint organization of international academic seminars will encourage students and school staffs to continue expanding their knowledge and expertise about Borneo, one of the most significant and fascinating regions in Southeast Asia.

As was stated during this discussion, University of Malaysia Sabah representatives had tentative intentions to visit Walailak University in October 2022. This will be a formal visit to sign a partnership agreement, jointly host a mini seminar, and explore future research collaborations in depth.
