April 26, 2021

Naruemon Klatookwan, a lecturer in the School of Political Science and Laws’ Political Science Program, has turned her interest in labor issues, Philippines studies, and socio-cultural dynamics in Southern Thailand into an anthropology research project titled “Transnational Families and the Migration Culture of Filipino Teachers in Thai Society: A Case Study of Filipino Teachers in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Southern Thailand.”

The Institute of Research and Innovation at Walailak University sponsored this research project in 2019. The project focuses on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), who have been an important social and cultural phenomena in the Philippines for many decades. Filipino migrant worker studies are also a significant academic subject in the areas of labor studies, cross-border migration studies, Philippine studies, and Southeast Asian studies.

Naruemon investigates the migration process of Filipino teachers in the southern Thai province of Nakhon Si Thammarat in this study. She raised questions about the connection between transnational family traits and the creation and preservation of their immigrant culture. The research carried out via fieldwork in the Philippines and Thailand, which included document research, interviews, and ongoing participation in community activities with Filipino communities.
